I recently found an independent appliance repair contractor who does a pretty good job for cheap. He does kitchen and laundry appliances (spent about 20 yrs working for Montgomery Ward). His trip charge is $45 and can be credited toward the repair if a repair is needed.
I got him to fix my fridge (installed a new starter kit on the compressor) and my washing machine (user error *no charge*). $119 total.
