Sponge treat walls

In the process of renovating a house. I've removed the popcorn ceiling and retextured it. Has anyone removed the sponge texture on a wall?  I can only think of belt sanding - but, that would be an absolute mess.

Refloat the walls with mud. I've done this on hundreds of walls, both commercial and residential. Its the same thing you do when we used to hang wallpaper on previously textures walls. Refloat twice if your going back with orange peel, splatter drag, or trowel finish. If your want a slick finish you need to hire the best, preferably someone with commercial experience where that type of finish is the norm

If you think the sponge texture is too thick to float over.
Wet, scrape, retexture, paint. Wet is better than sanding. My two cents.
